SWPCA Winter Show 2007 by Dorothy Dawson

Elizabeth Cain’s cob stallion Llandderfel Prince Edward (Ffoslas Prince of Wales/Lunesville Princess Grace) headed the open ridden mountain and moorland section at the SWPCA Winter Show, Devon Leisure Centre, before being judged supreme ridden champion. The four year old cob, partnered by Sarah Burns, had been bought in Lancaster as a foal and been broken at home. He was both Welsh in-hand and ridden champion at the Festival of Champions, Ingliston E.C.

Reserve supreme was the novice champion, Evelyn Aitken and Gillian Beattie’s Eyarth Zeus, a son of Eyarth Celebration, which had been bought as a yearling and was ridden at the show by Emma Byrne. Zeus had also won at the Scottish All Welsh Show. Irene Gillespie’s reserve novice, her Rhydymeirch Twysog Swallow, had been champion at Stewarton and Dalrymple as well as champion worker at the High Jinks Show.

Rachael Snowie rode her eight year old palomino gelding Rosedust Smarty Pants (Criccieth Smart/Tullibardine Sun Floret) to firstly head the novice workers from the Aitken/Beattie owned Rosedust March Mist, before claiming the overall title from the open champion, Megan Mills’ Largs-based Llansantffraed Charmer, an eighteen year old gelding which had been a hunter trials winner at Ardgowan Riding Centre. Katie Gordon’s section C mare Tireve Ruby was reserve in the open worker classes and Katis was also second in her dressage class, this time riding her Royal Highland winner, the seven year old Connemara gelding Siskin Lad.

A beautiful new trophy, The Morven Royal Sovereign Memorial Bronze, presented by Mags and Ali Black for the winner of the novice mountain and moorland worker over 138cms class was won by Gladys Dale’s carriage driving champion Bolgoed Explorer. This multi-talented cob, ridden by Carol Boswell, then went into the dressage arena where he won a performance medal. Second in his open worker class was another of Gladys’s cobs, the homebred Scole Golden Warrior, a great grandson of Llanarth Welsh Warrior.

The supreme ridden champion of the Scottish All Welsh Show, Sunita Fairley’s Waxwing Equerry, claimed the mountain and moorland mini championship, and the reserve here, Kim Stewart’s Shetland pony Klino-Rahaoull Valkyrie, which had been reserve coloured horse/pony at the Ladybank Show, caught many an admiring eye at Devon. Members’ ridden champion was Mhairi Miller’s Welsh section C gelding Wyebrook Rhyfelwr Bach, with Rosedust Smarty Pants reserve.

Erica Hay’s in-hand Merryford Bewitched (Whitethorn Charm/Diptford Spellbound) was overall part-bred champion. This grey mare had been champion at Alyth Show, ridden by Nikki Hay. Mary Nicoll’s ridden winner, the coloured Tidkin Tigerlily, was reserve. The four year old daughter of Harroway Mr Harlequin had won the coloured ridden class at the Festival of Champions. Zoe Martelle Nicoll, who led Tiger Lily, was champion young handler, the reserve being Tamera Scott who was showing her section A gelding Ceannaiteach Senator. Janette Scott’s thirteen year old section D stallion Cyfyng Cadno Coch, which is ridden in Western classes by Alistair Scott, was reserve to Merryford Bewitched in the members’ in-hand section.

Stuart and Lorna Kay’s three year old cob Ellington Model Lady, which had been pony champion at Lanark, Biggar and Peebles Foal Show, claimed the supreme youngstock accolade. A two year old section C colt Wynbrook Sorceror which Pat Burnie had bought
from his breeder and which had won at the Aberdeen and District Show, claimed reserve place.

Nicola Luti’s filly Glynhir Brenhines Haf, which she had bought at the Cob Sales, was champion foal. She had previously been reserve at Ceredigion. Nicola also showed a previous Cob Sales purchase, her five year old gelding Costa Ricardo, to take the adult championship. Shona Thomson’s section C colt Starloch Ladies Man was reserve foal. Neuaddparc Lady in Red, his dam, had five years ago headed the foals at this show. The winning section A foal was John Borthwick’s Glenbrae Bliss (Ceannaiteach Majestic/Phildon Bounce), whilst Lorna Keay showed the reserve adult, a chestnut section C pony Coedineirin Rising Dawn (Synod Rascal/Parc Dawn) purchased in Derby the previous May.

Yearling champion was Roseisle Lady in Red, a daughter of Moelview Mohawk, shown by Miriam Foran. This filly had been a winner at Strathallan and Lanark, Reserve was Lesley and Kevin Moy’s Cromagtir Con, a son of Ambercott Pageboy.

Scott Davidson’s Highland pony gelding Strathmore Rhum, bred by Charlie McQuattie, was mountain and moorland in-hand champion, with Angela Calder’s part-bred Marvellous Mayo reserve.

High-Jinks 2007

Sunday the 29th April dawned bright and sunny although down at the Race Course at Longshot, Lanark there was a cool brisk breeze blowing, enough to keep the woolly jumpers on!  Within half an hour of the first horsebox arriving, the field filled up with expectant competitors all ready for an exciting day.

Alistair Black, from Dalkeith constructed an excellent Working Hunter Course which ensured everyone had a fair but trying round.  With Alistair concentrating on the jumping, Jill Meikle judged the conformation.  Out of the two novice and two open classes they picked their Champion in I Gillespie’s Rhydymeirch Twysog Swallow with Dryfe Sheer Harmony, owned by M Robinson, coming a close Reserve.  Next came the “Wobblies” to try their hands (or should I say hooves) to the test.  This was eventually won by I&M Donnelly’s Restar Harry.  The Unregistered classes, although down in numbers this year found it’s fine winner in Ocean’s Midnight Mint, owned by P Lillington.

Edith Gunn, from West Lothian, started with the M&M Registered Lead Rein class which proved to be a difficult task as the standard was extremely high.  This was won by Julie MacDonald’s Thistledown Orlando ridden by her daughter Sian with Linda Cormack leading, and this partnership later took the Mini Championship.  Following on from this was the M&M Registered First Ridden which was won by N&P Page’s Morwyn Lady Verity who then became Mini Reserve Champion.

The In-Hand classes started with the larger sections having fuller classes, which gave Ross Anderson, from Dumfries, a superb choice.  After much deliberation he chose his M&M In-Hand Champion in the Passford Stud’s Passford Cream Cracker, a stunning palomino Welsh Section C Yearling Colt.  Reserve to him was Jackie McKnight’s Section D Filly Trefaldwyn Lady Alis who also took the Best 2 Year Old ticket in her class.

Charlie Cousens was the judge for the M&M Part Bred classes and found his winner of the In-Hand section with S Law’s Romanno Royal Fiasco who later became M&M Part Bred Champion.  Reserve to him, and 2nd in their class, was G Younger’s Cosford Chatter.

Charlie later judged the M&M Registered Ridden section.  Although these classes produced a wide choice of animals he had no hesitation in taking Waxwing Macenroe, L Campbell, the Novice small breeds winner as his Champion.  Reserve to him came the Novice large breeds winner, Section D Stallion Llanllugan Mike’s Lad, owned by E Hill and ridden by Beth.

Edith later judged the selection of Unregistered classes and with so many types of pony and horses found the competition to be of a very high standard.  Her two choices for Champion and Reserve both came out of the ridden class with Patricia Lillington’s Ocean’s Midnight Mint taking Champion and E Hill’s newly acquired Cuncliffe Lo Lou, ridden by her daughter, Beth, taking Reserve.

The novelty section, again very popular, saw the Young Handlers winners in C Cohen and Belan Fizz (8 years and under) and Ali Ludo with Arabella Normand winning their class (9-12 years); Pony Club Pony/Riding Club Horse was successfully won by Ann Marshall’s Porter Lady ridden by Sally Davidson; the Mounted Fancy Dress was a very difficult choice for judge Jill Meikle and Edith Gunn and eventually won by Julie MacDonald’s daughter Sian with both herself and her pony, Thistledown Orlando, dressed up at Clowns.

Edith, Jill, Charlie and Alistair joined forces and found their Supreme Champion of the day in S Law’s Romanno Royal Fiasco with Waxwing McEnroe (Laura Campbell) as Supreme Reserve.

After the last jump had been dismantled and the last ring post put away, the show committee and helpers left the showground satisfied that everyone went home happy and tired – looking forward to next year!
